Vila Kennedy Film School

The Technological vocational centre (CVT) in Vila Kennedy, managed by FAETEC, opened in 2014, but it's still not operating: the situation of disrespect is then manifest in the impossibility of residents benefitting from the knowledge and education opportunities the institution was supposed to provide. Until today, no course has been offered, in a region that is already characterized by the lack of infrastructure and resources to cater to local needs, and whose distance from the city centre makes the access to other opportunities more difficult. Our proposal is to transform the abandoned place into a Cinema Reference Centre able to bring together specialists in the field who work on the territory, offering them an opportunity to coordinate, exchange and learn from each other. The rooms would be used to carry out audiovisual production workshops, screening of national and international films, debates and lectures with guest from other parts of the city. Reactivating the building through that intervention would bring visibility to the region, with the possibility of getting the attention of public and private agencies to local demands. Besides, it would offer residents the opportunity to get in contact with a language and devices they are normally excluded from, due to the fact that they live so far away from the places in the city where that kind of initiative takes place. Also, through cinema, the users would have the possibility of investigating a multitude of different points of view, of discussing with different groups and individuals and of developing a critical stance about the reality around them, which could be an encouragement for change. A practical training in film would give them the opportunity to structure new narratives about places, issues and people, whose reality is often ignored, made invisible or mystified by the rest of the city. This kind of visibility is a necessary premise for the city to be able to create policies able to diminish the current conditions of disrespect.
