IDENTIFY A PUBLIC SPACE
Manhattan:
Manhattan is the arena for a new model in urban and architectural design, with its very revolutionary lifestyle, it was analyzed by important architects and critics.
With the introduction of the 1916 zoning law comes a level of control on the cities scale explosion, without being too restrictive and therefore unintentionally providing a basis for intelligent architectural invention. This metropolis needs and deserves its own specialized architecture.
The inception of the culture of congestion (as Rem Koolhaas call it) and the technologies developed, notably the elevator and steel, facilitate the rise of the Manhattan skyscraper,a city with a very developed multicultural population, integrated into a glorious whole.
We identified 4 public spaces, located in different locations inside the city, the selection was based on the ratio of action that they can cover, and we created a general model that can be applied (with small variations) to all of them.
DESIGN PROPOSAL
The proposal is based in the synergy as a fundamental concept. Is not a physical intervention, is a flexible and open manifestation of contemporary art. The visitors will define themselves the final design of each of the places in a popular demonstration of free will and common interest.
Each park selected, will be characterized by data, information, not design. This data will allow the visitors (artists, students, housewives, children and aged people) to create in the site their own interpretation of this given information. The construction in a common effort, by different people, with different backgrounds, of different elements that can be used or simply exposed in a continuous process of change and renovation.
The proposal propose a simple grid (based in the real structure of the city), inside this, each quadrant is defined by specific data:
Elements to use (lamps, benches, garden, agricultural plantations, trees), Saturation of elements (color), Maximum and minimum hight, % of occupation of the plot, material to use (natural or artificial).
The only predefined structure is a simple structure (a pavilion) that can be used as place for expositions and contain in the roof solar panels, facilitating the functioning of the site without necessity of electrical support and during the 24 hours of the day.
Summarizing, the proposal is a flexible intervention that claims the union of the visitors, that will create their own universe based in their imagination and capacity of common work.
IMPLEMENTATION
The proposal is, at the beginning conceptual. The first part is based on the interpretation by the visitors of the places of the given data, and based on this, a posterior design, that can be anything, anв the character oа the area will never change (if this data is respected).
The project is created finally by the interactive performance of the public, that will design and constructi each proposal.
The construction should be realized in partnership with an arts institutions, that must give the logistical support in each location. In each park the structures/works of art created can be realized with recycled materials. The same visitors, voluntarily will plant greenery, is some parts gardens, in other with agricultural purposes. A continuous reminding of the potentialities of common work and union independently of religions and backgrounds.
TEAM
Anna Kononova and Adrian Labaut Hernandez:
We are both students of architecture, and as we work together we dont think is necessary to separate very much our role in this work. We have been participating in several competitions, and, as part of our preparation we conducted interviews with several professionals who can help us for our professional evolution. In the case of this competition, was of great help to interview the architects Stefano Boeri and Andrea Branzi.
Anna Kononova: Im am very related to the Scenographical Design, I have done several projects for theater and I am very attached to small projects such as pavilions and houses, this kind of projects really develop your capacity for the experimentation on human reactions, in not very large areas, that make it more difficult and interesting.
Adrian Labaut, i perform more in the philosophical field, I am very interested in the theory related to art in general. I am very interested in the psychology. The human behavior and ways to influence on it through various manifestations of art is one of my great passions.
