Instalação lanterna dos afogados
After a meeting of artists and intellectuals from our community, Respect was chosen as theme for the Urban Interventions that were to be proposed. From the beginning, the word “respect” gave rise to great debate and a lot of questions. I will speak about respect by addressing the lack thereof. In my opinion, the current situation in which thousands of street dwellers find themselves perfectly expresses what disrespect towards people means. Last year, it was found that 5.5 thousand people were living on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, spread over 96 different areas of the city. This is a share of the population that is overlooked daily, living with no dignity and vulnerable to violence and addiction. One of the aims of my work is to give much-needed visibility to those who find themselves in such a delicate situation, thus generating respect. I want to give them a moment to voice whatever they want. I also want to highlight the contempt that can be found in language and in derogatory words that are used every day. I wish to bring about reflection about these people and the place they have in the city.
The work will consist of a mobile itinerant installation, made to occupy and illuminate dark places in the city where there is a concentration of street dwellers. It can be easily duplicated to occupy several places at night without losing its meaning. The installation takes the form of a giant paper lantern. In its interior, there will be an audio of interviews where the homeless tell their stories. Edited photos will be projected on the outside, accompanied by written words from the interviews. It will consist of a rectangular structure made of PVC pipe lined with white tracing paper; the sound box, a computer and four projectors, one for each wall, will be mounted on a tripod at its centre. It will be 3 meters high and 1.3 meters wide,
