My Sky
This Installation responds to circumstance of spatial exclusion of part of population as physical representation of all present inequalities: economic, social, status, education, and all other.
Unavailability of lots of spaces through denied access creates and illustrates relation between various social groups within urban realm. Walls, fences, gates, lines and signs of prohibition form cityscape that communicates inequality and disrespect.
Artwork “My Sky” reacts to named condition. Installation consists of (half) festival triangle flags and (half) barb wire, hung between two sides of streets, ideally one well-off, and the other underprivileged. Division and difference between “neighbours” is replicated in opposite character and meaning of flags and wire. What one celebrates, the other can not reach. Spatial Installation / Intervention could have as many lines as it is feasible for chosen location and be as long and high as supporting structure allows. In accordance with location, installation should be adjusted to be proportional when observed, and to form proper and recognizable space below. Both the location and intervention size are subject to suggestion of Organizers. It could be hung on lampposts, windows, terraces, etc.
Involving local citizens and raising awareness that we experience same thing differently (and vice versa) creates opportunity to start a dialogue, understand “opposite” side and gain more respect for other fellow citizens. This work challenges our notion of respect and complex relationships among people as individuals and groups. It offers another way of seeing certain objects and importance they have. We often take visual signals (within city) for granted; we are teached to understand their directive without questioning their true intentions, underlying messages and influence they have on our behaviour and the way we perceive and “use” our cities. City is not the same for everyone, and this intervention addresses and emphasizes that condition.
