Cultural tent
In the city of São João de Meriti, just like in most cities in Rio's metropolitan area, there is great social inequality among citizens. Many residents only use the city as a commuter town, since they make pendular migrations to the capital in order to get work. When they arrive home, there are few places where workers and their children can have access to culture. The neighbourhoods that are farther away from the city centre are completely forgotten by the few social movements in the city. We can see there is much talent being wasted due to the lack of structure the city offers young people. Young people with great talent for music and sports are being wasted packing groceries in supermarkets to help their families. The proposal of the intervention is to bring the cultural tent to areas with little access to culture, working with short seasons. With help from the Government, teachers would work in the tents, teaching musical instrument classes, art workshops and also theatre performances. This project would provide access to music, wrestling and several other projects could be set up in those tents, such as sambas circles, rap, even encouraging sports practice; bringing culture to many young people who could turn that access into a starting point for their lives. The on-going project would bring many social and personal achievements to the city. With the project, people who previously thought their future couldn't escape a sad reality because of the lack of structure could fulfil their dreams of becoming musicians, among other activities the access to culture could create for those young people. Our young people are the future and this project would open new horizons.
